To staff the minds of students with a lot of information is not really the objective of good education. Education would aim at creating in them a genuine curiosity, a desire to learn; to give them the ability to comprehend and the discrimination to separate the grain from the chaff, and inspire them with high ideals and regard for human values and concern for the downtrodden. "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man", said Swami Vivekananda. To achieve this desired end, Tinsukia Commerce College, situated at the remote backwoods of Tinsukia Town in the Dist.
Higher Education can be a curator for developing human values and improving human lives in society. A country becomes knowledge based, if higher education sector of that country becomes adequate and updated. India’s present Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER: 12% to 15%) reflects incomplete coverage, inordinate time leg, etc of higher education sector in India.
A College of Commerce in Tinsukia was thought of in the year 1971 by some members of the then Governing body of Tinsukia College. An Ad-hoc Committee was constituted in 1972 with Late J. N. Bhuyan as president and Sri B. K. Saraswat as secretary. The committee decided to start the college under the name of Tinsukia Commerce College from the session 1972. Late Krishna Pada Dutta Choudhury took the charge of the college as Honorary Principal. Perhaps he considered it prudent to accept the post with the idea of spreading and meeting the aspirations of students for commerce education in this remote corner of the state when there was no commerce college in its vicinity.
In 1977, the Govt. of Assam was pleased to allot 35 bighas of land, which now under the possession of the college. In its onward march, commenced with one faculty commerce introduced post graduate studies under Distance Education under Dibrugarh University-in 2002, KKHSO University study centre in 2008, IGNOU Partner Institute in 2009 and B.A in 2011 could be designated as the land marks in the development and expansion process. It is also planning to introduce HS Arts of AHSEC and MBA of Assam Science and Technology University of Govt. of Assam in the near future.
The Goals spell out clearly the objectives based on the mission and vision which are to :
· Provide access to higher education in commerce to people having a desire for education.
· Provide job oriented education as well as to tender man making education.
· Also to provide general education to rural and poor community of the society.
